Tips, tricks, and tutorials
- Intro video with snippets of features: http://player.vimeo.com/video/118802763/?api=1
- Key mappings are similar to Photoshop, but can be reconfigured.
- Things aren't applied to layers unless the layer is selected to prevent messing up.
- View all of an images metadata, as a summary or even an XML
- Work in "Personas" or stages.
What the Tool Does Well
Right off it is a convenient substitute for Photoshop. If you're used to dropping a high pass or basic overlays to create custom filters, Affinity makes it even easier by making those tools more available than they are in Photosohp. Affinity provides you with the right tools at the right time using "personas". It also takes Photoshops "Preview" mode and reimagines the tool by allowing you to compare the before/after side by side (with sliders!).
What it Does Poorly
There aren't any tutorials made available by Affinity on their site, so some tools and features are hard to find. Some demos by Affinity are available on YouTube, and a handful of reviews and tutorials by Howard Pinsky are floating around. There are still some weird and annoying bugs getting worked out. For example, if I used a brush, stopped, and used it again, it would create a gap between the paths of the two brushes.
What happens when you...
Affinity Photo is the opposite of Designer. It is meant to replace Photoshop (or Lightroom, to some extent), but also offers capabilities of Illustrator. You can export images, clips, and layers to SVG to be used responsively in your mobile, web, and other projects that require graphics to be scaled.
