 Music Ball Sound Review

by Lari Tanner

Description

Music Ball is an iPhone app.  It was on the Sound Tools list, and had not been reviewed before.  So I thought I'd tackle it.  What I found is that it's a fun toy using sound and ambient noise for play. Here's the link to the App Store so you can see the features and images https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/music-ball/id459376759?mt=8

Access

It is a free app you can download to your iPhone or iPad.  I'm not sure but I believe it is only for iPhone and iPad.

Sample Usage

It is basically a toy that uses sound and color.  So it is just as visual as it is auditory.  When you turn it on you'll open up a black screen, if you slide your fingers on the screen colored balls appear wherever you touch the screen.  The balls make ambient sound using a scale, because depending on where you touch  the screen the octave and notes change.

Tips, tricks, and tutorials

There is an arrow key at the top left hand corner of the screen, if you touch that, three other buttons appear.  The one at the upper right allows the balls to bounce back and forth from one side of the screen to the other, the one on the lower left is a pause and play button, and the button on the lower right is a delete button, so you can start over with new balls and sounds.

What the Tool Does Well

It's fun to play with.  It's rather simple, and I think if you wanted ambient sound in the background of something it might work for that.

What it Does Poorly

There's not much to do with it, it's fun to play around with when touching your fingers to the screen, but it's more noise/sound than music.  Some noises depending on how high it is are grating, and once you've played around with it, you lose interest.

What happens when you...

If you have it on the first screen with just the arrow button, the balls fall threw the screen, so to speak, and come back at the top of the screen to fall again, if you have it on the screen with all four buttons, the balls just bounce back and forth.

Additional Resources

I couldn't find much more info on the app except what the App Store had. When I clicked on the MusicBall resources, it took me to my iCloud account, I couldn't figure out why it sent me there, but then I noticed the background of my cover page on iCloud has the music balls floating around in the background, or at least I think that's what it is, no sound was there though.
