Viddy Review

by Debi Terry

Description

Viddy is an app that makes it easy to capture, edit and share mobile videos. It lets you record multiple clips by pausing and resuming videos. Viddy also gives the option to combine clips to create a "montage", for up to 30 seconds to create what is known as a viddy. After shooting a video, one can add effects, music, and contrast. Through Viddy you can share videos one-touch publishing to Facebook, Twitter (where they will play within the stream), YouTube, SMS or email. You can choose to share videos publicly with the Viddy community, with friends only, or privately with select individuals.

Viddy has been around for almost two years and it announced on November 4th, 2013 that it was rebranding itself as Supernova. It will contains two separate apps - Epic and Clique.

Access

Viddy is available on iTunes for iPhones, iPod touches and iPads. It is also available for Android phones. It is free to download.

Tips, tricks, and tutorials

• Under Viddy’s Explore tab, one can search for viddys by the “Featured,” “Popular,” “Who to follow,” “Newest,” “Recommended,” “Celeb,” or “Funny” tabs.

• If new to Viddy a good place to start browsing is the Popular tab, it will save you from watching boring viddy after boring viddy.

• Browsing using popular hashtags such as #dogsofviddy

Setting Up

After downloading Viddy, sign in with your Facebook or Twitter accounts. Alternatively, you can sign up with an email address.  You can personalize your stream by following people whose videos might interest you. You can find people to follow either from your Facebook or Twitter friends, your phone's address book, from the suggested people's list or using the search option.

Viddy lets you change the avatar, location and privacy settings. It also allows you to discover content by browsing or searching for it using a keyword, hashtags or categories. Owners are notified on likes or comments on their viddys.

Making a Viddy

To create a viddy you can choose to use your phone's camera or select an existing clip from your device's video library. You can clip a video that is longer than 30 seconds. Advance options allow you to change the aspect ratio and free or paid for effects. You can caption videos, categorize and add hashtags to make your viddys more findable.

Sharing a Viddy

You can like, favorite, tag, comment on viddys. You can also share videos with a quick share to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, via SMS or email the clip to a friend.

What the Tool Does Well

• It has 15 pretty cool video filters

• It makes it easy to share your videos on social networks and also to find content to watch

• Viddy lets you hold-and-release to take individual clips that can be strung together to create a viddy

• Option to shoot your video with the flash on the entire time you’re recording

• If longer video is what you are looking for then Viddy's 30 seconds is more than competitors' length: Vine -  6 seconds and Instagram -15 seconds

• You can add a frame to your camera to keep things level

• You can rotate flip to the front-facing camera

• It has a flash that you can turn on as you are shooting video

• You can add music from a provided (yet limited) list

• You can play viddys within a Twitter stream or Facebook feed (taking advantage of Facebook's Open Graph to publish user activity on timeline)

What it Does Poorly

• Wouldn't really say it does it poorly, but its hashtag search function is not as robust as Vine's (which has Twitter on its side)

• 30 seconds video for mobile video seems a little too long. There are some viddys in the stream that get unnecessarily drawn out

• The ease of creating videos leads to a propensity of mundane videos that are hard to sift through. Few and hard to find professional content makers

• Viddy has a very wide-ranging clientele. While this might be a good thing, it makes it hard to create niche communities

• Lots of selfies

What happens when you...

Companies are using Viddy as a powerful marketing tool. Southwest Airlines created a successful campaign on Viddy. It held a contest for participants to win 2 free plane tickets if they uploaded Southwest-themed Viddys. They supported this contest on their blog and on Twitter with the #SWAViddy hashtag. http://www.viddy.com/southwestair
