iMovie Review

by [Andrew Waite]

Description

iMovie is the basic user video editing software from Apple. It has the basic video editing features that all video editing platforms have, wrapped up in a fancy Apple package.

Access

Free with Mac OSX (so a Mac is required)

Sample Usage

Tips, tricks, and tutorials

The first step would be to launch the program and start a new trailer or a new movie. Both of these things are centered around templates. You can then drag and drop content into the timeline and move it around and trim it how you would like. iMovie lets you select what part of the clips you want to add in much more intuitive way than most video editing software - it might be confusing at first. Once you have added content from your various libraries and put them on your timeline you can add transitions and music and 'SHARE' the video to export it. Done and done.

What the Tool Does Well

It makes it easy to add content and arrange it. Very quickly you can make a decent 5 minute video. Keeps quality of video high. Makes making movie trailers easy and pretty fun. Publish straight to Vimeo or YouTube.

What it Does Poorly

iMovie is not good for making those fine edits. Since the video editor is meant to look pretty the gritty details of second markers are done away with. This makes fine tuning your video difficult. You also can not currently change title fonts.

What happens when you...

One thing that is particularly nice is that when you drag video from one end to the other it brings all the video with it. For instance if you are trimming a clip on the front end the beginning of the video is still video and not just black space like in Premiere Pro (where you would then have to do a RIPPLE DELETE). This makes things easier. If you import any video from any quality - iMovie takes advantage of the material and will change the settings to match.

Additional Resources

Similar products include most free or dirt cheap editors but they don't have the solid quality Apple does.
