MS Paint Review

by Kristin Patterson

Description

This is a “graphics painting” program; metaphorically speaking, this is the ball-in-a-cup of digital graphics programs in that it’s as low-tech as the genre gets, has a simple user interface, and very simple functionality.

Access

The application is free and comes with every Windows system (PC only).

Sample Usage

What the Tool Does Well

Paint provides entertainment if you have just installed Windows and don’t have anything else to do.

Paint’s been around so long, that the majority of PC users (all ages) are relatively familiar with it, and the user interface accommodates those who haven’t been previously exposed.

What it Does Poorly

Paint defaults to saving your files as JPEG’s, so if you’ve created a highly detailed masterpiece that you wish to display on a projector (for example), your pixel resolution won’t be preserved.

Paint is simple. This can be interpreted as “Paint is boring” in that the limited selection of “draw, erase, cut” options stifle one’s creative process.

There is a similar program for Mac called “Paintbrush for Mac” but it doesn’t come with the same tools as Paint.
