[Ohm Studio] Review

by Max Peng

Description

Ohm Studio is the first real time collaborative digital workstation. Musicians are able to start a project and work together in one work place. It gives music makers the ability to work and collaborate on projects wherever they are.

  • Music makers no longer have to travel to meet
  • time efficiency and accessibility.
  • Great online community
  • Finding musicians different genres
  • Discussion page for community help
  • Current blog updates.

Cohmunity

The Cohmunity is the place where all Ohm Studio users will gather to find partners to make music with, view others profiles, create groups with others, share ideas on the forums or post projects mixdowns. Mixdowns can be posted on the group’s profile, as demos. In short, the Cohmunity will be a one stop place for collaborative work. It will be possible to access the Ohm Studio’s Cohmunity features from the application itself or from any web browser.

 Access

Ohm studio is currently available free as public open beta. After the beta phase, there will be a monthly charge for the same service for ten dollars per month.

You can pre order Ohm Studio for $42.00 to get a 6 months or a special offer $243.00 lifetime. The current offer will increase monthly until the beta ends.

Pre order users are able to take part in participating in feedback and drawing schedules and decide in upcoming features. You will be part of ohms studios development of the software and help improve and give feedback before the release.

What the Tool Does Well

PROS

  • Great looking GUI
  • Stable audio and MIDI engine
  • Collaborative freeze (if your partner uses a plugin you dont have, you press the freeze button which means it will show up as an audio clip on your version of OS)
  • Automation clips (you draw automation curves into an 'item', which can be moved, split, copied, looped like any other track. Nice)
  • Included are all OHMforce effects - which are really impressive.
  • Online sync works well. (I paired with a guy who wrote a lead synth line for my tune. He added a minimonsta into the rack and programmed a MIDI part and it all showed up in my screen within 2 mins!)
  • Mixer is comprehensive and easy to navigate
  • Good inspector view which shows the details of each track.
  • Chat function built into the GUI, means real time collaboration and communication is easy
  • Dual Monitor support

What it Does Poorly

  • Lots of Bug reports and installation issues
  • No fade handle on audio clips
  • No drum maps - only piano roll
  • Piano roll a bit fiddly  - would be improved with right click tool select
  • No group channels for proper bussing
  • No Midi Channel input for multi-timbral synths. Hence you would need one rack for each Kontakt instrument you wanted
  • No manual timestresch of audio at present
  • Item/Track merge required. At present dragging an item over another overides it and deletes the lower item
  • Pre-roll for recording doesnt seem to work at present
