Animoto Review

by Patrick

Description

Animoto is a simple video creation tool. However, it does not create videos in the traditional sense. Text, images, and video clips are strung together with a theme and music to create a video.

Access

Animoto is available as free, plus, and pro. A free account will allow you to make unlimited videos, but only 30 seconds in length. You may not download your videos. Plus accounts will allow you to make unlimited videos of any length. Certain templates are withheld, and video resolution is limited to 360p (though you can pay to upgrade videos to HD). Pro accounts give access to all templates, more music, and free upgrades to HD resolution. You can access Animoto via the web, iOS, and Android.

What the Tool Does Well

The learning curve is minimal because so much of the video making process is abstracted.

Features are continually added or enhanced.

Free and plus accounts are reasonably priced ($0 and $30 a year).

Can download user generated content (plus and pro accounts).

Has a library of music, text, and video clips.

Will link to cloud storage accounts to access your pictures.

Will allow you to export to Youtube and SmugMug.

Frictionless sharing on social media.

Unlimited storage.

What it Does Poorly

Because almost everything is abstracted, you cannot fine tune your videos.

Must use MP3s when importing your own music.

Once you process a video, you cannot make any more changes without first making a copy.

Can only download your content if you pay.

Limited nature of text and video clips.

Price jump from plus to pro is quite expensive ($249).

Individual fees for HD conversion are also expensive.

Creating a video on a mobile device will not allow you to continue edits from the web. Only the final video will appear on the website.

Integration of Facebook comments will cause your video to appear on the commentator's wall.
