Dan Awesome's Rage Maker

Page history last edited by Autumn Francis 11 years, 1 month ago

Dan Awesome's Rage Maker is a tool for creating digital comics using a set of pre-constructed faces and memes, with the ability to add in your own pictures and images. Many of the user generated comics on the internet that are shared on websites like Reddit come from generators like this one.

This webapp is free of charge and can be accessed at http://ragemaker.net/. As most of the comics generated using this or similar tools have extremely similar appearances, they have gained a sort of cult popularity and have been dubbed "rage comics". The original intent of the comics were to be about situations that caused someone to "rage", though they have evolved into a wide number of different types of comics using the same images.

Pros:

  • Easy to use
  • Free of charge
  • Has widespread popularity
  • Integrates directly into Reddit and image hosting services
  • Is actually pretty intuitive for such a crude looking and free tool
  • Saves as a .png

Cons:

  • Difficult to navigate
  • Can seem clunky and foreign to work with at first
  • Has been known to have its fair share of bugs, but these are being worked on
  • Can take a while to get started
  • To save a file you actually have to type out .png on then end of the file name or it wont save correctly.

Features:

  • Includes a feature to save a comic in progress to your desktop for later editing. This really comes in handy when you first get started and you have a lot of ideas, but are slow to finalize them.
  • Includes a feature to upload a finished comic to Imgur (an image hosting services) or Reddit (a social network based around user generated content and user rated news/websites).
  • Includes 28 different categories of "rage faces" with well over 100 different faces and bodies to work with.
  • Allows for the insertion of your own images, including inserting an image based on a URL (so you can easily find images online to use in your comics).
  • Allows you to crudely draw your own graphics paint style into the comics. This is also a feature of the comics that has a sort of cult following.
  • Has functionality for spell checking your comics.
  • Allows for an unlimited number of frames to be added to the comic.
  • Has layering functionality so that you can arrange your rage faces and images in the proper stacking order.

Overall this is a pretty fun tool to play around with. Once you get the hang of it, you can even see how much other people like your comics by posting them to Reddit and seeing how others respond.
