Camstudio Tool Review (Matt)

I't

Camstudio is a very simple, basic, open-source screen recorder.

Pros/Features:

  • It's free.
  • Ability to add annotation to screen shots or video clips.
  • Cursor can be enhanced or highlighted for emphasis within the video.
  • Panning (zooming in and out) permitted through autopanning.
  • Record the whole screen or selected portions only.
  • It's free.

Cons/Caveats:

  • Extremely bare-bones. No bells and whistles like those in professional programs such as those in Camtasia Studio, i.e., no way to add audio, call outs, enhanced pointer options, etc. after the fact.
  • Is not a video editor. No splicing multiple multiple clips together or layering other file types (images, audio) with the original video file, other than the ability to add video-in-video via webcam.
  • Special effects are extremely limited. Because it's not an editor, there is no way to add transitions, title slides, narration or background music, a table of contents for navigation (Camtasia Studio), or interactive quiz (Camtasia Studio).
  • Only AVI and Flash (SWF) formats supported.
  • Plan your audio recording in advance. It must be recorded simultaneously with the video.
  • Not supported on Macs (unless they can run Windows).
