Canv.as

Concieved by 4Chan creator, “Moot” (Christopher Poole), Canv.as is a relatively new platform for social meme manipulation and, maybe, creation. Described as ”a place to share and play with images”, the site allows users to remix and build upon images already uploaded to the site, or to upload their own and - hopefully - begin a path of change. Over time, revisions of images are tracked, resulting in a visual evolution of a meme.

Here is an example of a post’s evolution:

1. An initial image is uploaded:

2. This post is then responded to by being remixed:

3. This post then elicits more responses:

4. All the while, more images are being produced and posted, resulting in more forks and paths of social production.

5. From the initial image, a thread - similar to those seen on 4chan - forms, revealing the order of production and general conversation around the micro-meme.

Additional abilities:

In addition to uploading and remixing images, users can tag images with pre-set icons to be searched, categorized, and indexed.

Oddly, the site currently requires a connection to Facebook to register. This is a stark diversion from Moot’s earlier statements about the importance of anonymity online...
