Pixlr - Using Curves

Pixlr is a free photo editing service that survives completely online. It is a great substitute to Adobe Photoshop for a couple of reasons. Obviously, the cost or lack there of is very appealing. Also, it is available from any computer and has around the same functionality as Photoshop Elements.

This tutorial will on the same feature reviewed here (the function of ‘curves’ on Photoshop. In pixlr, you can create text, change colorations, work with layers, correct red eye, blemishes and more.

Since this is a free photo editing service, it does have limitations compared to Photoshop however, I haven’t been able to find anything that would suggest a casual Photoshop user could save money and use this service instead.

One positive is that when you save your image, it gives you a variety of options. It lets you save your image to your computer to your personal Pixlr online library, Facebook, Flickr and Picasa. Having these options readily available, the ability to share your finished product is even easier using this free service rather than Photoshop.

First, go to http://www.pixlr.com and click on ‘open image editor’.

From there, Pixlr gives you the option to create a new image, open an image from your computer, from a website or from your personal library whether it be Pixlr or Facebook.

Once you have a picture imported, go up to the tool bar on the top of the webpage and click on ‘adjustment’ and scroll down to ‘curves’.

Your ‘curves’ menu box pops up and you are able to select places on your graph to add or take away color.

If you want to add your color graph, click on histogram. One difference between Pixlr and Photoshop is that you have to click on the white, grey or black color droppers next to the graph to plot colors on the graph you want to adjust. In Photoshop, you can select any color in your picture. Otherwise, you are good to go.

Once, you select okay, you are ready to export your image in your preferred format.
