Text Tool Review - Lewis Giles

Tagxedo - http://www.tagxedo.com/

Overview:
Tagxedo is a a custom word cloud generator. A word cloud is a way of representing text by key words. There are several word cloud generators on the web but Tagxedo is the simplest to use for generating word clouds with custom shapes. Tagxedo allows you to upload your own photo so that you can manipulate the layout of the next easily.

Resources Required To Use Tool:
The latest version of Microsoft Silverlight 4 (4.0.51204.0) http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/

Cost and Where To Access:
Tagxedo is free to use. You can access Tagxedo at http://www.tagxedo.com/

What The Tool Does Well:
Tagxedo makes custom word clouds incredibly easy to generate. Using my Tweets as my text and this simple clip art L I was able to produce this word cloud.

What The Too Does Poorly:
Tadxedo website can be slow. Personal pictures used to generate word clouds have to be fairly simple in shape. Tagxedo is unable to generate word clouds without using clearly defined pictures. Leaves Tagxedo stamp at the bottom of every exported word cloud. Tagxedo is not able to make clearly defined word clouds from pictures of humans. Below I again used my Tweets as the text but this time used a picture of myself as the shape of the word cloud. The result were not as visually pleasing.

Example Use:
If I were writing on my blog about my new cat and how he was spoiled. I could use a picture of the water fountain that I bought him:

Or

I could use the text from the Amazon.com reviews of the fountain and the picture of the fountain to create a custom word cloud:

Or

I could use a generic cat outline and the text from blog about the fountain to create a custom word cloud:
