Resources

Tools (alphabetical)

  • 8mm Vintage Camera
  • Adobe Premier
    • Another video editor is Adobe Premier. The difference between it and FinalCut Pro is that you must encode your video files prior to importation. The mechanics once you're into the working program are similar to FinalCut.
    • Adobe Premier is also available on the computers in the ATEC labs.

  • Adobe After Effects
    • An Adobe software which is used to create graphics and visual effects in video during the post production process.
    • Also perform non linear editing.
    • After effects available at the ATEC labs.
    • Adobe After Effects Review

  • Adobe Character Animator  (Francis Eyth)

A new plug-in for After Effects introduced this year that allows you to animate a 2D character, which is set up in Photoshop via layers, using mic                and camera input from your computer's webcam. Your camera and mic basically automates your 2D character's mouth and facial expression                animations!

Also there are many parameters that more advanced/technical animation or software practitioners can access to further polish an already quick                and automated animation production process.

  • Adobe Dynamic Link
    • Quickly share assets between After Effects and Premiere Pro without rendering/exporting.
    • Review by Jenna Lovato
  •  Adobe Flash
    • Flash is a vector-based animation tool. It is also a very powerful tool. Vector-based means that you can enlarge your animations with losing any image quality.
    • Also available on the computers in ATEC.

  • FinalCut Express
    • Final Cut Express is a now discontinued video editing software. It is based on Final Cut Pro and Final Cut Pro X, however it was created for consumers. Despite its discontinuation it is still used by amateur and professional video editors.
  • FinalCut Pro
    • FinalCut Pro is the industry standard for video editing. One of the great features is you don't have to encode your video footage prior to importing into the program. (Encoding takes a lot of extra time).
    • FinalCut also has additional programs that work seamlessly with FinalCut, such as SoundtrackPro where you can tweak your audio to get it just the way you want it, and then re-import it into your working FinalCut file.
    • You can purchase FinalCut Pro on campus with your student discount for $599. It is available on the computers in any of the ATEC computer labs.

“Simple and easy, when you need edits now”
Cuts is the new kid on the block and is all about remixing viral video. They don’t host content, but instead take videos from other sites (YouTube, Google, Myspace). With Cuts you can trim, loop, add preloaded sound effects, and insert captions to enhance the original. Editing is straightforward, consisting of changes to the sound, caption, and navigation levels for the video. Every edit can be re-cut, embedded, and emailed. In the future, Cuts will be expanding into simple editing for digital movies and TV shows.
