PHHHOTO Review

by Hannah Murphy

Description

I like to think that it is like an Instagram for gifs. Once the gif is created, you can choose one of the given filters to use on it.  When posting the finished product your feed, you have the option to share it on other social media. It also gives you the option to save the gif to your camera roll. Phhhoto uses a hashtag system as well.

The gif making part of the app works buy taking multiple pictures at once, then looping them to play continuously back and forth.

Access

The app is free and can be downloaded in both the App store for Apple devices and Google play for Androids. You can also view their #wow on computers as well: http://phhhoto.com/wow

Sample Usage

Tips, tricks, and tutorials

How to use the app:

  • When you first log in, it will ask you to create a username and password. Then you will have to give your phone number (has to be yours because it will send you an activation code via text or phone call).
  • To create a gif, you press the “camera” tab. You have the option of either using your front or face camera (to change it, press “FLIP” in the top right corner). Tap the green circular button in the center and then film your object of choice.
  • Once it’s been filmed, you can adjust the speed of the gif, or add text to the gif. In the bottom of the screen, you can choose from a variety of filters.
  • You also have the option of saving the gif to your phone right then, though it will leave a watermark of the app name on it.

Tips and tricks:

  • For this effect: http://phhhoto.com/tag/trailsss
    • Turn on the grid, then press in the black space to the left of the ‘x’ button and your phone.
  • To adjust speed and frame rate:
    • Put 2 fingers on the screen (before you take the picture), and turn your phone counterclockwise.
  • To save it without a watermark:
    • Hit “next” when you’re done editing the photo. Then, in this step, tap the “save video for Instagram” slider, then hit post. This will both post the gif to your profile, and save it to your camera roll (without the watermark!).

What the Tool Does Well

  • It’s an easy & quick way to create gifs
  • Has a number of filters you can add to the gif
  • When you sync your Twitter, Tumblr, and/or Facebook, it becomes incredibly easy to share across multiple social media platforms.
  • The #wow hashtag is a good source of inspiration

What it Does Poorly

  • The layout of the app can be a bit confusing at first.
  • You can’t upload photo-bursts or video onto the app to use.
  • Has a few features that aren’t easily accessible.
  • If you see a filter than you like, and want to keep using, you have to buy it, otherwise it’ll disappear from your options and there’s not guarantee that it’ll be back.
  • Can only make one account.

What happens when you...

  • Since it’s a social media application, it is marketed as more of an app one can use to document times with friends, as opposed to creating narratives. But since it does have similar layout as Instagram, using it to create a narrative is definitely something that can be done. The only drawback of this, is that you really can only have one account (unless you were to delete). http://phhhoto.com/hvnnxh
  • To accommodate that, you can always save the gifs to your phone, and create a work just using the gifs.
  •  Though you can’t upload your own video to use, you CAN record a video on a screen. This could work well if in your piece you’re going for a mysterious or ominous sort of feeling. http://tsoatoday.tumblr.com/post/142728046589 (password: achilles)
