FinalCut Pro Review

Page history last edited by dmt100020@utdallas.edu 11 years ago

FinalCut Pro is the industry standard for video editing. I just know the basics at this point, but can't wait to learn more about it.

If you've worked with timelines before, it's easy to get started working on videos. It's a simple drag-n-drop into the timeline and you're on your way. You can also preview your video in the preview window before you drag it into the timeline if you prefer. This is helpful when you just want to include certain sections of a longer video sequence. Simply click on your "in" and "out" points and drag it into the timeline. If you need to tweak it later, you can do that too. Which leads to another great feature about FinalCut, you are able to make cuts and edits to your videos when they are on the timeline rather than having to cut them down to exactly what you want prior to inserting them.

When you drag video into the timeline, the sound drags with it, however it shows in the sound timeline (below the video timeline). The video and the sound remain linked automatically so you won't accidentally move one without moving the other, in which case your sound won't match your video. However, if you want to use a different sound track with your video, you can unlink them, delete the sound section, and drag in your new sound track.

Like any good video editor, FinalCut Pro also includes lots of transitions and effects you can add to your video. For example, if you want to fade out from one scene and then fade in to another, that is very simple to do. The program also allow you to tweak the sound manually as well. You can raise or lower the overall volume or to different sections. It all depends on the effects you are going for.

FinalCut Pro also allows you to layer videos and sound to give them an even more professional appearance. Furthermore it allows users to insert static images and text. This comes in handy if you need to add subtitles or lower thirds for news or documentary type videos.

If you've never worked with timelines before, it does take some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, it's a great tool to have in your creative arsenal.
